The Benue State chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for what they described as worker-friendly reforms, even as they pressed for urgent action on outstanding salary arrears, pension improvements and job regularisation.

In a joint address delivered by NLC Chairman, Comrade Terungwa Igbe, during Workers’ Day activities, the organised labour credited the administration with prompt payment of salaries and pensions, implementation of the new national minimum wage, and substantial clearance of inherited wage arrears.

The unions also highlighted the distribution of palliatives, subsidised grains, and government-funded medical interventions for workers as key welfare interventions.

They further cited the recruitment of over 9,700 teachers and consistent support for Workers’ Day celebrations as evidence of the government’s commitment to labour issues.

On infrastructure, the unions pointed to ongoing construction of flyovers in Makurdi and Gboko, renovation of the state secretariat, expansion of rural and urban road networks, installation of solar streetlights, and upgrades of public schools and health facilities, including a cancer treatment centre.

Despite the commendation, labour leaders urged the governor to address lingering concerns, including payment of outstanding salary arrears, improved remuneration for local government workers and teachers, and enhanced pension packages.

They also called for the conversion of casual workers to permanent staff, recruitment into the civil service, and provision of a functional secretariat and official vehicle for the NLC to improve its operations in the state.

Responding, Governor Alia represented by his deputy, Barr. Sam Ode, assured that his administration will not let workers down as he further stressed that governance in the state under his watch will not be sacrificed on the altar of politics.

“We shall maintain focus on our mandate of promoting inclusive growth, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Benue,” the governor maintained.
