Facts have emerged on why the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, may have resigned from his position on Friday.
Nigeria Project reliably gathered that Ganduje quits his position over the reported move by former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to join the ruling All Progressives Party (APC).
Sources at the national secretariat of the party said the ex-national leader was threatening to resign over a purported agreement between President Bola Tinubu and Kwankwaso for the latter to join the ruling party.
According to the sources, all the principal officers of the party, including the National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, had tried to prevail on him not to quit, but to no avail.
“We are currently pleading with him (Ganduje) not to resign. He is upset that Kwankwaso is coming to the APC. It seems the two of them are sworn enemies. All the stakeholders are begging him to stay,” the source said; but later, the former Kano State governor resigned.
“He has eventually resigned. We couldn’t stop him. I think there is something personal between him and Kwankwaso, who is set to join the APC after some discussions with Mr. President,” the source added.
The immediate past APC National Chairman, Ganduje and his former political boss, Kwankwaso were once political allies during their years in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The outgone APC National Chairman, Ganduje, was Kwankwaso deputy governor in Kano State, when he later succeeded him as governor.
Unfortunately, their relationship depreciated not long after Ganduje succeeded Kwankwaso as governor in 2015 under the APC. Since then, the two political allies have become rivals, often clashing over control of Kano’s political structure and influence.
There is massive recent decamp from opposition parties to the ruling APC. The rumoured planned by Kwankwaso to defect to the ruling party (APC), which sources said was supported by Mr. President, may be connected with the strategy for 2027 general elections, considering the political influence that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has in Kano politics.
