CSOs Told To Drive Govt’ Development Efforts

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria have been urged to complement government efforts by actively driving sustainable development, accountability, and good governance across the country.

The call was made by an international development consultant, Dr. James Zasha, during the unveiling of the 20th anniversary logo of Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiatives in Makurdi.

Dr. Zasha said CSOs occupy a strategic position in the social contract between government and citizens, stressing that beyond supporting government policies, they must empower citizens to demand transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery.

Citing the recently introduced tax law, he noted that widespread public confusion over its provisions underscores the responsibility of civil society groups to provide clarity, raise awareness, and educate citizens on their rights and obligations.

He urged CSOs to remain consistent in leaving lasting positive legacies and commended Community Links for two decades of impactful service to humanity.

Earlier, the Country Lead and Executive Director of Community Links, Dr. Helen Teghtegh, said the organization’s 20-year journey has created platforms for meaningful contributions to societal development.

She highlighted achievements such as the adoption of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) framework for Internally Displaced Persons’ voting and the implementation of a Safeguarding Policy for humanitarian interventions by the Benue State Government.

The event also featured the presentation of a N300,000 matching grant to a widows’ Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) group, following the successful management of an initial N50,000 inception grant over a 12-month period.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Benue State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BENSEMA), the Bureau of International Development and Cooperation, and the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Benue State, all of whom congratulated Community Links on its 20th anniversary and pledged continued collaboration.
