President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has flagged off the construction of a flyover at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, a key component of the $950 million Makurdi–9th Mile dualisation project designed to ease traffic, boost trade, and transform regional connectivity.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, said the project spanning 260 kilometers, or 520 kilometers of dual carriage was among the largest legacy projects under the current administration, financed by the China Exim Bank.
He described the flyover as a personal gift from the President to the people of Benue.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, who flagged off the project on behalf of President Tinubu, hailed it as a “game changer” for Benue’s economy.
He said the new infrastructure would ease farmers’ access to markets, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen the state’s position as Nigeria’s food basket.
Lead consultant Engr. Adam Onundi explained that the dualisation is divided into five sections, with the Wurukum flyover marking the beginning of Section One.
“Each carriageway will measure 7.3 meters in width, with durable stone base and asphalt layers to meet international standards,” he said.
The Project Manager of China Harbour Construction Company, Mr. Wang, pledged timely and high-quality delivery, assuring that major works would be completed before the next general elections.
The project is expected to ease congestion in Makurdi while unlocking agricultural and commercial potential across Benue, Enugu, and neighbouring states.
