Twelve passengers kidnapped from a Benue Links bus in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State have regained freedom after spending seven harrowing days in captivity.

The victims were reportedly released about 4pm on Sunday and received by officers at the Okpokwu Divisional Police Station.

However, two of the passengers, said to be visibly weak, were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

The passengers were abducted on June 22, 2025, when armed men ambushed the government-owned Benue Links bus with registration number 14B-143BN near Eke.

Ehi Johnson, Public Relations Officer of Benue Links Transport Company, confirmed their release, noting that details of how they regained freedom remain unclear.

He said the details are still sketchy but further information will be made available to the public soon.

The affected vehicle was en route to Makurdi from Abeokuta in Ogun State when it was hijacked seven days ago.

Of the 12 passengers and a driver aboard, only one managed to escape and alert authorities at the Eke Police Station.

Spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, said she had not yet received official briefing on the development.
