Over 90 teenagers have benefited from a free mathematics mentorship initiative designed to tackle mathematics phobia and strengthen interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.
The initiative, JMATHS, founded by Jennifer Hilejime, provides young learners with simplified and engaging approaches to mathematics while developing their problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
The recently concluded JMATHS Mathematics Mentorship Summer Programme offered participating teenagers free mentorship aimed at improving their knowledge, confidence and ability to solve mathematical problems.
The programme climaxed with the JMATHS 100 Questions Race, which produced three champions: Usman Eneojo Simeon, Iyuana Ann Numgba and Anigilaje Bilal Akorede.
The organisers said the achievements of the students demonstrated the potential of young people when provided with appropriate guidance, opportunities and a conducive learning environment.
According to JMATHS, the initiative is committed to grooming innovative and confident young people capable of pursuing STEM careers and contributing to solving future societal challenges.
The founder called on parents, schools, educators, individuals and organisations to support the initiative and help expand its reach to more teenagers.
She said the partnership would enable more young people to overcome their fear of mathematics and acquire skills needed to excel in STEM-related fields.
