A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bemgba Iortyom, has formally joined the 2027 Benue governorship race with the backing of former governor Samuel Ortom.
Iortyom, a long-standing member of the PDP, made his entry into the race known on Tuesday evening following a visit to Ortom’s Abuja residence, where he received what he described as “fatherly blessings” to pursue the state’s top job.
Speaking after the meeting, the former PDP state publicity secretary highlighted his decades-long loyalty to the party, noting he has remained a committed member since 1998 and served in several strategic roles at both state and national levels.
He said his experience within party structures and grassroots networks would be instrumental in mobilising support and delivering victory for the PDP in the next election.
On key issues, Iortyom identified insecurity and rural underdevelopment as top priorities, pledging to enforce the state’s anti-open grazing law and restore safety across affected communities.
He also outlined plans to drive economic revival, promote community-based development, and strengthen social cohesion across the state.
Iortyom further criticised the current security situation, warning that parts of the state remain under threat from armed groups, and vowed to reclaim full control of Benue’s territory if elected.
With his official entry into the race and endorsement from Ortom, political watchers think the PDP contest in Benue is beginning to take shape as more aspirants are expected to emerge in the coming months.
