As the world marks International Day Against Human Trafficking, Hon. Mrs Josephine Piyo has called for action to tackle Human Trafficking in the state.
The deputy governor lauded the government proactive measures put in place to tackle the menace.
Piyo, who described human trafficking as modern-day slavery, said the day is a stark reminder of the pervasive and insidious nature of Human trafficking and a global issue that affects millions of people, particularly women and children.
She said the day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the heinous crime and to advocate for the protection and empowerment of victims.
“Today is a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to work together to prevent trafficking, prosecute perpetrators, and support survivors in their recovery and rehabilitation.
“The International Day Against Human Trafficking also highlights the need for stronger laws and policies to combat trafficking, as well as increased collaboration between government and organizations to address this crime.
“As a government who are aware of this menace, and are resolute to end this form of modern-day slavery, we are aware of individuals who are trapped in the cycle of exploitation and abuse, and are committed to the fight against human trafficking and saving many.
“The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development together with the Executive Chairman Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission have done exceptionally well in driving our government’s policies in combating the menace and we will continue to do better, “ she said.
The deputy governor called on parents, guardians, and groups, to come together and reaffirm their commitment to combating human trafficking in every form.
She particularly called on relevant organizations to support the ongoing efforts of the government in addressing the crime, adding that the fight requires a multifaceted approach and unwavering dedication.
