Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have carried out a successful clearance operation in Mararaba Gbagir in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, neutralising an armed suspect and recovering a cache of weapons.
A statement by the Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, on Thursday indicated that the troops came under fire during the operation which sparked a gun battle between them and the criminal gangs.
The operation, conducted on Tuesday, according to the statement, was based on actionable intelligence indicating the presence of suspected armed elements in the area.
“One criminal was killed in action, while others escaped with gunshot wounds,” the statement noted.
It added that during the sweep, troops recovered six AK-47 magazines, three 9mm rounds, two 7.62mm special rounds, a locally fabricated gun, and a locally made pistol.
Items believed to be used for spiritual protection – charms and shrines – were also destroyed on site.
The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, hailed the troops for their swift and precise execution of the mission.
He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to rooting out criminal elements from Benue and neighbouring states under the OPWS mandate.
“This operation reflects our dedication to restoring peace and ensuring the safety of lives and property,” Major General Gara said, urging locals to share credible intelligence that could aid future missions.
