The Och’Idoma and Paramount Ruler of Idoma Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Agaba’idu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, has accepted his appointment as National Patron of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) as he calls for a stronger role of sports media in youth development and nation-building.
The monarch accepted the appointment at the weekend during a courtesy visit by the National Executive Committee of SWAN to his palace in Otukpo, Benue State.
Speaking while receiving the delegation led by SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, the Och’Idoma expressed gratitude for the honour and commended the Association for its more than six decades of contributions to sports development, youth empowerment, and national unity since its establishment in 1964.
He described sports as a vital instrument for empowering young people, promoting social cohesion, and fostering peace, noting that sports journalists play a critical role in shaping values, inspiring excellence, and preserving Nigeria’s sporting history.
The royal father urged SWAN to intensify advocacy for grassroots sports development, youth mentorship, ethical journalism, and policy reforms aimed at improving athlete welfare and sports administration.
He also called for closer collaboration between sports media practitioners and traditional institutions to mobilise communities and promote peace through sports.
“I accept this appointment not just as an honour, but as a responsibility to support initiatives that promote unity, discipline, and excellence through sports and the media,” he said.
Earlier, Mr. Benjamin said the appointment was based on the Och’Idoma’s track record in peacebuilding, youth empowerment, and national development, expressing confidence that the Association would benefit from his leadership and moral authority.
The visit concluded with the presentation of the letter of appointment, goodwill messages, and group photographs, as SWAN reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and responsible sports journalism nationwide.
