Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have dislodged armed herders and recovered an AK-47 rifle during a farm patrol in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.

Acting Media Information Officer of OPWS, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, said in a statement on Thursday night that the operation took place on Wednesday August 13, 2025, when troops deployed at Mbakyior Outpost and Agidi community approached a suspected crossing point used by armed herders.

He explained that the herders opened fire on sighting the troops, but were forced to flee after a swift response.

A search of the area led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

“In a swift and coordinated response, OPWS troops returned fire forcing the hostile elements to disengage and flee the area. During subsequent search of the scene, an AK-47 rifle, one magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition abandoned by the fleeing armed herders were recovered.

“Security forces have maintained both day and night patrols in the area to deter further incursions, reinforce civilian confidence, and ensure the continuity of socio-economic activities without fear of attacks,” the statement added.

The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged continued vigilance to sustain peace in Benue and neighbouring states of joint operations.
