A lawmaker earlier suspended by the Benue State House of Assembly has emerged the new Speaker of the Assembly.
Alfred Aondoaver Emberga, representing Makurdi North constituency, was on Sunday evening elected Speaker following the resignation of Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh.
Dajoh’s resignation letter was read by the Clerk of the House during an emergency sitting convened on Sunday.
Emberga was nominated for the position by a colleague, Douglas Ackya of Makurdi South constituency and seconded by Abu Umoru, member representing Apa constituency.
The development comes barely two days after Emberga and three other lawmakers Shimawua Emmanuel (Vandeikya 2), Cyril Ikong (Oju 2), and Abu Umoru (Apa) were suspended for three months over alleged conspiracy to remove the former Speaker.
However, 23 lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Lami Danladi who presided over the sitting, set aside House rules to lift the suspension and clear the way for Emberga’s election.
Sworn in at about 6:35pm, Emberga in his acceptance speech pledged to uphold the integrity of the Assembly, ensure effective representation, and work harmoniously with the executive arm of government.
