The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed plans to commence the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Benue State starting August 18, 2025.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Professor Sam Egwu, disclosed this yesterday during a press conference held at the INEC headquarters in Makurdi.

According to Egwu, the exercise is in line with the Nigerian Constitution, which provides for continuous voter registration to accommodate citizens who have attained the age of 18 since the last general elections.

He explained that the process would begin with online pre-registration, ahead of in-person registration, which is scheduled to kick off on August 25 at all INEC Area Offices across the 23 local government areas and other designated centres in the state.

Prof. Egwu outlined the categories of individuals eligible for the 2025 CVR to include: those who turned 18 after the 2023 general elections; citizens who could not register earlier due to being out of the country, in prison, or otherwise unavailable and individuals seeking to replace lost or damaged voter cards due to theft, crisis, or other reasons.

Others are persons requesting changes or corrections to their personal details and voters wishing to transfer their registration within or across states or polling units.

He emphasised that all services offered during the CVR are completely free of charge, warning the public to report any INEC official demanding payment or gratification.

“All eligible citizens are encouraged to take advantage of the registration early to avoid the usual last-minute rush and the inconveniences that come with it,” Egwu said.

The REC urged residents of Benue to participate fully in the exercise to ensure they are eligible to vote in future elections
