The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the creation of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five police stations to Divisional status in Benue State to strengthen policing in troubled areas.
According to the Benue State Police Command, the move followed an appraisal of recent security operations which revealed gaps in coverage between the police and communities in some Local Government Areas.
The new Area Commands are Daudu and Naka, while Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan police stations have been elevated to Divisions.
Under the new structure, Daudu Area Command will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Divisions, while Naka Area Command will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Divisions.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Udeme Edet, noted that the restructuring will enhance response to distress calls, improve conflict resolution, particularly between farmers and herders and ease policing in large and difficult terrains.
The Benue Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, therefore appreciated the Inspector General for the crucial adjustment and commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his support in efforts to secure lives and property in the state.
