Gunmen have killed a farmer and abducted another person during an attack on Umogidi village in Entekpa district of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

Local sources said the armed attackers stormed the largely deserted community around 5pm two days ago, shooting the farmer before whisking away another resident.

The attack was later repelled by soldiers deployed in the area, but the abducted man’s whereabouts remained unknown as of the time of filing this report.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of the Umogidi Crisis Management Committee, Mr. Ajene Otache, told our correspondent on the telephone that the deceased, identified as Jato, was a farmer from neighbouring Gwer West Local Government Area who resided in Umogidi.

“Yes, there was an attack in my village, Umogidi. One person was killed and another is missing,” Otache said, adding that a search was ongoing in surrounding bushes to locate the abducted person.

Efforts to get official confirmation from the Benue State Police Command proved unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, did not respond to calls or messages sent to her phone.
