At least two people have been killed in a fresh attack by armed invaders in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
The victims were said to have been ambushed on Saturday while returning from Jato-Aka market to Nzaav community in Yaav Council Ward of Turan district.
Residents alleged that the attackers were armed herdsmen who opened fire on the victims and inflicted multiple machete cuts.
A former Supervisory Councillor in Kwande LGA, Akerigba Lawrence, said that the incident occurred around 4 pm, adding that the bodies were discovered with deep wounds and lying in pools of blood.
“This is disturbing. The bodies were badly wounded. It shows that the attacks by terrorists are still ongoing even after overrunning all the communities except Jato-Aka in Turan land. This is nothing but terrorism,” Lawrence said.
Chairman of Kwande LGA, Yarkwan Tersua, confirmed the incident, describing the recurring killings as devastating and alleging a religious undertone to the violence.
He appealed for urgent intervention from the federal government, noting that residents remain helpless and defenceless amid repeated assaults.
He added that investigations are underway to identify the killers.
Police spokesperson for the Benue Command, DSP Udeme Edet, has yet to comment on the incident, as calls and messages to her telephone were unanswered at the time of filing this report.
