The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the June 13, 2025, attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Enemari, disclosed the development while briefing journalists on Thursday at the Command Headquarters in Makurdi.
He said the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation and has already provided useful information to investigators.
Enemari revealed that four security personnel – two soldiers, one civil defence officer, and a civil protection guard – were killed during the incident, while one police officer is still unaccounted for.
According to him, the attack was launched with an assault on the police station in Daudu, a nearby town, where police operatives engaged armed bandits in a gun battle that led to the death of two attackers.
While security attention was concentrated on Daudu, another group of assailants reportedly stormed Yelwata and carried out a coordinated raid.
The police commissioner assured residents that security measures have been intensified in Yelwata and other surrounding areas.
“We have mobilised additional personnel, including mobile police units, special tactical teams, and military reinforcements. These deployments cover not just Yelwata but other vulnerable communities in the area,” he stated.
